PASSAGEN – Interior Design Week Köln
Review
January 18 - 24, 2010
PASSAGEN 2010 began with the “previews” on January 18, 2010 which attracted great interest. Many visitors, particularly national and international professionals, started out in the morning to view the approximately 190 exhibitions on the design route – among them the celebrated exhibition by the Swedish designers FRONT, who won the “A&W Designer of the Year” award.
“Context:Design” was a recurrent theme at PASSAGEN and was at the forefront this year – primarily addressing the interplay of design and architecture, as well as the reciprocal effects of art and design. Included were the exhibitions at Museum Ludwig and the projects “Walls Rooms Illusions,” “Trojaner,” and “Favela Ikea,” among others. The Museum of Applied Art and the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud also participated in this regard. In addition, society’s demands on design were dealt with – particularly including the topics sustainability and ecology.
DESIGNERS FAIR presented itself for the 2nd time as a forum for the young design scene – with international guests and a new format for design networks, groups and project work: the “concept rooms.” With over 65 exhibitions on 4,000 m² of space, it was able to build on its success from the previous year and welcomed about 40,000 visitors. In total, PASSAGEN drew far more than 150,000 visitors in the design city Cologne – including many design professionals as well as a broad design-interested public. Design Post, another audience magnet at PASSAGEN, was extremely popular – especially among professionals.
In the Belgisches Viertel neighborhood and the inner city, the stream of visitors increased again greatly on the weekend. A veritable “migration” of visitors stormed the exhibitions until late Sunday afternoon.
The Design Route Ehrenfeld continued its positive development. On the one side, the principle of individual exhibitions around Körner Strasse was further established and was expanded with new additions. On the other side, visitors came in droves to discover “new territory”: from Helios Strasse, to the presentations at Meiré und Meiré/Cologne Factory on Licht Strasse, to the Vulkan complex, to ecosign and JACK IN THE BOX.
We look forward to seeing everyone again at the next PASSAGEN – from January 17 to 23, 2011.
PASSAGEN was held for the 21st time in 2010.
